Grom surf gear checklist

Hey there, wave chasers! It’s Intan here – your grom surfer from Batukaras, and today I’m stoked to share something super fun and helpful: What’s in My Surf Bag? Yep, I get this question a lot from friends, other surfers, and even curious travelers who spot me on the beach. So here it is – a full breakdown of the things I always pack in my surf bag to keep me safe, prepped, comfy, and content while chasing waves.

Whether you’re just starting out or already paddle into overhead sets, having the right gear makes your surf sessions better. I hope this list helps you build your own surf bag setup. Let’s get into it!

1. Wax – Sticky Stuff for Grip

Wax is a MUST. I use tropical wax (because Batukaras is warm all year), and I always bring a fresh bar in case I need a touch-up. It keeps me from slipping and sliding around on my board when popping up or carving.

Pro tip: I keep a small wax comb with it to clean up old wax and reapply for max stickiness.

2. Leash – Don’t Lose Your Board

Never paddle out without a leash. It keeps my board close if I wipe out and stops it from hitting someone else. Mine is coiled and the perfect size for my board length. I always double-check the cuff and cord for wear.

3. Wetsuit – For Chilly Days

Batukaras is mostly warm, but sometimes I wear a spring suit early in the morning when it’s breezy or if I’m out for a long time. A wetsuit also helps protect my skin from the sun and reef.

4. Surf Hat – Sun Smart Style

My surf hat is a lifesaver! It shades my face, ears, and neck during those long sunny sessions. I like the kind with a chin strap so it stays on in duck dives.

5. Sunglasses – Post-Surf Chill

When I’m done surfing, I throw on my sunglasses to protect my eyes from UV and glare. They also help me look cool while rehydrating and journaling in the sun. 😎

6. Towel – Always Pack One

A big, soft towel is key. I use it to dry off, sit on the beach, or sometimes as a blanket. It’s one of those things you never want to forget.

7. GoPro & Surf Mounts – Capture the Stoke

I love filming my surf sessions with my GoPro. It helps me see how I’m doing, what to improve, and it’s also just fun to relive the good waves.

I use two main accessories:

  • GoPro Floaty Mount: Keeps my camera safe and floating if it falls off.
  • Monopod Floating Selfie Stick: Makes it easier to get cool angles and clips from the lineup.

8. Sunscreen – SPF 50 PA+++ Always

No joke, sunscreen is one of the most important things in my surf bag. I use a water-resistant formula with SPF 50 PA+++ to protect my skin. Reapplying is key – even if it's cloudy!

9. Lip Balm – Don’t Forget Your Lips!

Sun + saltwater can really dry out your lips. I use a lip balm with SPF to keep them smooth and safe.

10. Shampoo, Conditioner & Lotion – Post-Surf Care

After surfing, I usually rinse off and wash my hair with a gentle shampoo and conditioner to get rid of the salt. Then I use a light hand and body lotion to keep my skin soft.

These are part of my self-care after sessions and help me avoid dry, itchy skin or tangled surfer hair.

11. Hand Sanitizer – Stay Fresh

Always good to have, especially when I can’t find a sink nearby. One quick pump and I’m clean enough to eat a snack or write in my journal.

12. Waterproof Band-Aids – Just in Case

Sometimes reefs or rocks catch you off guard. I keep a few waterproof band-aids for any small cuts or scrapes.

13. AirPods – Music & Chill Vibes

When I’m stretching or just relaxing post-surf, I love listening to music. My AirPods live in a tiny pouch in my surf bag, ready to go.

14. Water – Hydration is Power

This one’s simple but important: always bring water! Surfing is a full-body workout and staying hydrated is key. I keep a reusable bottle in my bag and refill it daily.

15. My Journal – Track Progress & Thoughts

One of my favorite things! I use my journal to track how each session went, write about waves I caught (or missed), and jot down thoughts, goals, or even draw. It helps me stay grounded and grow as a surfer and a person.

Bonus: Snacks for Energy!

I also like to toss in a few snacks – like bananas, energy bars, or crackers. After a long surf, I’m always hungry and having a bite helps keep my energy up.

Bonus: Extra Hair Ties & Scrunchies

Long hair and surfing? Not always the best mix! I pack extra hair ties and scrunchies just in case one breaks. Trust me – it saves the day more than you’d think.

Final Thoughts: Pack Smart, Surf Happy

That’s everything in my surf bag! It might seem like a lot, but every item has its purpose. Whether it’s for safety, stoke, self-care, or capturing content, these are my must-haves for every surf session.

If you’re building your own surf kit, use this list as inspo. You don’t need fancy stuff, just the essentials that work for you. I’m always updating mine as I grow and learn more, and I’ll keep sharing the journey with you here on The Wet Journal.
