My First Surfboard: How It All Started in Batukaras

Every surfer remembers their very first board—the one that taught them how to chase waves, wipe out, laugh, and dream big. For me, that board came into my life at the very beginning of my surfing journey, in a little corner of Indonesia called Batukaras.

I still remember how it all happened, just a few weeks after I caught my very first wave at the end of 2023. Here’s the full story of my first surfboard, the memories it gave me, and what’s coming next in my surfing adventure!

🏄🏽‍♀️ The Story of How I Got My First Surfboard

At the end of 2023, I had just fallen in love with surfing. Every day at the beach was a new adventure—standing up, falling down, paddling for waves with everything I had. It didn’t take long for my family and coach to see that I was hooked for life.

One afternoon, a local surfer who had been coaching me told me about a Japanese surfer who was returning home. Before leaving Batukaras, the surfer wanted to sell their board. It wasn’t brand new, but it was still in great condition and had the right vibe for a young surfer starting out.

Without thinking twice, we made it happen. That day, I became the proud owner of my very first surfboard—a board that would carry me through so many firsts.

The Board: Technical Details and Why It Was Special

My first surfboard was a thruster setup with three fins, but it had five fin slots in total—meaning it could also be used as a quad if needed. It was 5’4″ long, which for some groms might sound small, but for me at the time, it was actually a little bit big!

The extra size was a blessing in disguise. It gave me more stability, made it easier to catch waves early, and helped me build confidence popping up. When you’re just starting out, that extra bit of forgiveness makes all the difference.

The board had a simple but classic design that made me feel like a real surfer every time I paddled out. No crazy colors or graphics—just a pure, honest board ready to ride.

It wasn’t a perfect fit forever, but it was perfect for learning. That’s what made it so special.

🌊 Learning to Surf With It: Wipeouts, Wins, and Everything In Between

The first few weeks with my board were all about experimenting. Some days I felt like a superhero; other days the ocean reminded me who’s boss!

I surfed my local break in Batukaras almost every day, practicing paddling, popping up, balancing, and riding waves as far as I could. My coach was there for every session, shouting tips and encouragement from the water and the beach.

One of my best early memories was catching my first unbroken wave all by myself. It was a small, gentle right-hander—and even though I only stood for a few seconds, it felt like flying. My first board made that moment possible.

Of course, there were also tons of wipeouts! 😂 But every fall taught me something, and every small success made me love surfing even more.

✨ What My First Surfboard Taught Me

My first surfboard taught me way more than just how to surf. It taught me:

  • Patience — Because learning takes time (and lots of wipeouts!)
  • Persistence — Because every wipeout is just a step closer to success
  • Gratitude — Because not everyone gets a chance to chase their dreams this way
  • Joy — Because every wave, even the smallest one, is a reason to smile

It also gave me my first taste of surf stoke—that feeling you get when you’re in the ocean, chasing waves, feeling free.

Even though I’m moving on to a new board this year, I’ll always be grateful to my first surfboard. It was the first chapter in my surfing story.

🏄🏽‍♀️ My Next Step: A Custom Board Built Just for Me

This year, I’m leveling up.
I’m ordering my first custom surfboard, one that fits my height, weight, and style of surfing perfectly!

I’m working with Robi Hendra, an amazing surfer and shaper from Bali. Robi is helping me design a board that’s lighter, more maneuverable, and ideal for the types of moves and turns I want to master next.

It’s a huge step because it shows how serious I am about improving and chasing my dream of becoming a WSL champion someday.

While I’ll never forget my first board, I know this next board will help me unlock new levels in my surfing—faster takeoffs, sharper turns, and maybe even some aerials (one day!) 🌈

💬 Final Thoughts

Getting my first surfboard wasn’t just about getting gear—it was about starting a journey.
That thruster was my first real connection to the ocean, my first partner in chasing dreams, and the reason I’m standing here today, hungry for more waves, more adventures, and bigger goals.

Wherever my surfing career takes me, I’ll always carry the memory of that board—and the feeling of riding my very first wave.

Stay tuned for my next post where I’ll show you the design and story behind my new custom board! 🏄‍♀️

What’s in My Surf Bag? All the Essentials I Bring to Every Session

what in my surfing bag? Intansurf

Grom surf gear checklist

Hey there, wave chasers! It’s Intan here – your grom surfer from Batukaras, and today I’m stoked to share something super fun and helpful: What’s in My Surf Bag? Yep, I get this question a lot from friends, other surfers, and even curious travelers who spot me on the beach. So here it is – a full breakdown of the things I always pack in my surf bag to keep me safe, prepped, comfy, and content while chasing waves.

Whether you’re just starting out or already paddle into overhead sets, having the right gear makes your surf sessions better. I hope this list helps you build your own surf bag setup. Let’s get into it!

1. Wax – Sticky Stuff for Grip

Wax is a MUST. I use tropical wax (because Batukaras is warm all year), and I always bring a fresh bar in case I need a touch-up. It keeps me from slipping and sliding around on my board when popping up or carving.

Pro tip: I keep a small wax comb with it to clean up old wax and reapply for max stickiness.

2. Leash – Don’t Lose Your Board

Never paddle out without a leash. It keeps my board close if I wipe out and stops it from hitting someone else. Mine is coiled and the perfect size for my board length. I always double-check the cuff and cord for wear.

3. Wetsuit – For Chilly Days

Batukaras is mostly warm, but sometimes I wear a spring suit early in the morning when it’s breezy or if I’m out for a long time. A wetsuit also helps protect my skin from the sun and reef.

4. Surf Hat – Sun Smart Style

My surf hat is a lifesaver! It shades my face, ears, and neck during those long sunny sessions. I like the kind with a chin strap so it stays on in duck dives.

5. Sunglasses – Post-Surf Chill

When I’m done surfing, I throw on my sunglasses to protect my eyes from UV and glare. They also help me look cool while rehydrating and journaling in the sun. 😎

6. Towel – Always Pack One

A big, soft towel is key. I use it to dry off, sit on the beach, or sometimes as a blanket. It’s one of those things you never want to forget.

7. GoPro & Surf Mounts – Capture the Stoke

I love filming my surf sessions with my GoPro. It helps me see how I’m doing, what to improve, and it’s also just fun to relive the good waves.

I use two main accessories:

  • GoPro Floaty Mount: Keeps my camera safe and floating if it falls off.
  • Monopod Floating Selfie Stick: Makes it easier to get cool angles and clips from the lineup.

8. Sunscreen – SPF 50 PA+++ Always

No joke, sunscreen is one of the most important things in my surf bag. I use a water-resistant formula with SPF 50 PA+++ to protect my skin. Reapplying is key – even if it’s cloudy!

9. Lip Balm – Don’t Forget Your Lips!

Sun + saltwater can really dry out your lips. I use a lip balm with SPF to keep them smooth and safe.

10. Shampoo, Conditioner & Lotion – Post-Surf Care

After surfing, I usually rinse off and wash my hair with a gentle shampoo and conditioner to get rid of the salt. Then I use a light hand and body lotion to keep my skin soft.

These are part of my self-care after sessions and help me avoid dry, itchy skin or tangled surfer hair.

🌊 From Batukaras to Big Dreams: My Surfing Journey Begins 🏄‍♀️

Intan, an 8-year-old surfer girl from Batukaras, standing on the beach in the morning

My Surfing Journey Begins at Age 7

Hi! My name is Intan, and I’m an 8-year-old girl from Batukaras, West Java, Indonesia—a small surf town with a big heart. I’m on a mission that might sound wild for someone my age: I want to become a World Surf League (WSL) Champion someday. 🌟

But let’s rewind for a second—because every big dream starts with a small wave.

🌴 A Life by the Ocean

Growing up in Batukaras means one thing: you’re never too far from the sea. It’s where families hang out, where kids run barefoot, and where the waves are always calling. It’s not just a beach—it’s home.

From as early as I can remember, I watched surfers glide across the ocean like they were dancing with the waves. Their boards carved paths over water like magic, and the way they smiled after catching a wave—I wanted that. I didn’t just want to watch. I wanted to do it too.

🏄‍♀️ My First Step on a Surfboard

I started surfing when I was 7 years old. It all began with a borrowed board and a lot of curiosity. My first coach was Mr. Budi, a kind and super-skilled local surfer here in Batukaras. He saw something in me and said, “You’ve got the heart, Intan. Let’s ride.”

At first, it was tough. I fell, tumbled, drank salty water (a lot of it 😅), and sometimes cried. But every time I stood up—even for just a second—I felt like I was flying. It was worth every bruise, every splash, and every early morning paddle-out.

💙 Why I Fell in Love with Surfing

“Surfing helps me grow—not just as an athlete, but as a person.”

Surfing makes me feel free, strong, and happy. The ocean is my playground, my classroom, and my biggest challenge. Every wave is different, and every session teaches me something new—not just about surfing, but about life.

I love the way the ocean changes with the sky, how the waves don’t wait for anyone, and how you have to be present, focused, and grateful. Surfing helps me grow—not just as an athlete, but as a person.

And honestly? Surfing is just so much fun! I get to meet awesome people, travel, and see the world in a way most kids only dream about. 🌍

🌟 The Goal: World Surf League (WSL) and Beyond

I’m not just surfing for fun (even though it’s the BEST kind of fun). I have a big dream: to be a World Surf League Champion one day. I know it’ll take years of training, hard work, early mornings, and big wipeouts—but I’m all in.

I also want to inspire other young kids—especially girls from small towns like mine—to chase their dreams. Whether it’s surfing, skating, dancing, or drawing… if it lights you up inside, it’s worth chasing.

🤝 A Message for Brands and Sponsors

I might be 8, but I’m already building something big. I’m not just surfing for myself—I’m creating a positive movement. With every wave I catch, I’m showing the world that kids like me have limitless potential.

Brands that support me aren’t just investing in a young athlete—they’re joining a journey full of heart, community, and global impact. I bring:

  • Authentic grassroots influence from Indonesia’s rising surf scene 🌊
  • Strong connection with Gen Alpha audiences—on social, in real life, and in the surf 🌟
  • A growing online presence via my blog The Wet Journal and Instagram @intansurf 📱
  • A mission to inspire youth and uplift coastal communities 🤝

Let’s make waves together. 🌈

💬 A Few Words to My Fellow Groms

“Start small, dream massive. The world needs your spark”

To every kid out there dreaming big: Don’t wait. Don’t be afraid. Start small, but dream massive. Whether you’re from a big city or a quiet beach like me, the world needs your spark.

I’m still at the beginning of my journey, and there’s a lot more to learn—but that’s what makes it exciting! Come ride with me. Let’s show the world what young hearts and fearless minds can do.
